Sedna is the Inuit sea Goddess Who controls the animals and abundance of the Sea. She is considered fickle, if not outright malevolent, towards humans.

Sedna was once a beautiful girl Who did not want to be married; She refused suitor after suitor, until finally one day a handsome hunter appeared at Her door. He managed to charm Her, and She said yes; but when they got back to his dwelling, Sedna found She had been tricked, for Her new husband was a kokksuat, or petrel-spirit, disguised as a man.

Word of Her unhappiness reached Her father, and he set out to rescue Her, arriving when Her petrel-husband was away; but not long after they took off in Her father's kayak Her husband returned. He pursued them, demanding his wife back; when they refused, the kokksaut called up a great storm.

Sedna's father panicked then, and to save his own skin threw his daughter overboard into the cold and raging sea. But Sedna held fast to the side of the kayak; he then mutilated Her hands with his axe, cutting off Her fingers joint by joint, then Her hands entirely, until Sedna sank beneath the waves.

Sedna now lives at the bottom of the Sea and is ruler of the land of the dead; the mutilated pieces of Her hands became the sea animals, the salmon, seals, walrus, and whales, which She can send to or withhold from human hunters.

I've shown Her in dark undersea colors, Her tangled hair, which She is unable to comb out without hands, floating behind Her. I have given Her the dark eyes of a seal.

NNNNNNNNGH, I love. Love. Love this version of Sedna. She's always spoken to me.... there's just something so powerful, so awe-inspiring, and so sad about her. Love this.
