Nut is the ancient Egyptian sky Goddess, said to swallow the Sun every night and give birth to it again every morning.

Her husband is Geb, the earth God; in the beginning of things They were inseparable, making love night and day. But the God Re had a premonition that one of Their children would overthrow Him, so He forcibly separated Them, dividing the Earth and the Sky. Geb was inconsolable at the loss of His love.

Nut was further forbidden from giving birth on any day of the year; but Thoth, taking pity on Her, won from the Moon five days for Her, and She was able to give birth to Her five children, Who, yes, did overthrow Re.

Besides swallowing the Sun at night, Nut is correspondingly said to swallow the stars by day, giving birth to them in the evening.

I've shown Her here at night, pregnant with the Sun, represented here by its hieroglyph of a circle with a dot in the center. This is also, incidentally, the alchemical and zodiacal symbol for the Sun even now. She is in a dress of deep lapis blue to represent the heavens.
