Description

Kybele or Cybele is the Phrygian mountain mother, called by the Greeks the Mother of the Gods. She is Great Mother Nature, Goddess of the forests, mountains, and the wild and abundant places. She was said to have a chariot drawn by lionesses; and She was often shown enthroned, a lioness to each side.

Her rites were celebrated with wild dancing, loud drumming and even orgies; the Romans, famously dour, were more than a little wary of Her, but even they gave in and worshiped Her, eventually.

There is a curious continuity to Asia Minor, from where Kybele originates; Her usual Classical depiction, as I said above, seated on a throne and flanked by lionesses, is also the pose used of a very ancient Goddess from the same area found at Catal Hoyuk in Turkey, and dating to Neolithic times, something like 6000-5500 BCE. Now I don't know if they are related in any sort of unbroken lineage way, but the similarity of pose and the guess that the Catal Hoyuk Goddess is one representing abundance (given Her large size) and Nature is intriguing. So here I've put Kybele, with Her usual attributes of lioness, mural crown and pine cone (for Her lost love Attis) in that very ancient pose. There's always a layer underneath.
